The Frame of the Game (Benford et Al. 2006)

Full title: The Frame of the Game: Blurring the Boundary between Fiction and Reality in Mobile Experiences (Benford et Al. 2006)

Proposed by Dominikus.

Abstract

Mobile experiences that take place in public settings such as on city streets create new opportunities for interweaving the fictional world of a performance or game with the everyday physical world. A study of a touring performance reveals how designers generated excitement and dramatic tension by implicating bystanders and encouraging the (apparent) crossing of normal boundaries of behaviour. The study also shows how designers dealt with associated risks through a process of careful orchestration. Consequently, we extend an existing framework for designing spectator interfaces with the concept of performance frames, enabling us to distinguish audience from bystanders. We conclude that using ambiguity to blur the frame can be a powerful design tactic, empowering players to willingly suspend disbelief, so long as a safety-net of orchestration ensures that they do not stray into genuine difficulty.

Geocaching in a Persuasive Perspective (Gram-Hansen 2009)

10/31/2010 10:04 pm

Proposed by Dominikus

Abstract

Geocaching is the global game of GPS treasure hunting with more than half a million geocaches currently hidden all over the globe. In this paper it is argued that the computing technologies involved in the activity, such as websites, desktop applications, GPS units and mobile software, together constitute a persuasive environment along with the physical artefacts that are central to the activity of Geocaching. It is possible to implement a persuasive strategy corresponding to various intentions and reach a number of users through Geocaching, and the mobility of the GPS technology facilitates that the information is given at the right time and place.

Full title: ARQuake: Outdoor/Indoor Augmented Reality First Person Application (Thomas et al.)

proposed by Frederic.

Abstract

This paper presents an outdoor/indoor augmented reality first person application ARQuake we have developed. ARQuake is an extension of the desktop game Quake, and as such we are investigating how to convert a desktop fi rst person application into an outdoor/indoor mobile augmented reality application. We present an architecture for a low cost, moderately accurate six degrees of freedom tracking system based on GPS, digital compass, and ducial vision-based tracking. Usability issues such as monster selection, colour, and input devices are discussed. A second application for AR architectural design visualisation is presented....
